For doctors and therapists

Our home-based hypnosis treatment is recommended only if you have diagnosed functional abdominal pain or irritable bowel syndrome in your patient. The presence of anxiety or depression is not an exclusion criterion. On the contrary, we know from our studies that hypnosis can greatly improve these feelings.

We recommend that you contact your patient at least once, 4 to 6 weeks after starting home-based treatment to hear how things are going and to motivate your patient to continue listening to the exercises daily. Our studies have shown that some children notice an effect on their abdominal complaints soon, but others can take longer. It is, therefore, important to motivate the children to continue listening to the recordings for 3 months on a daily base.

Even if there are complaints of abdominal pain after 3 months of exercise, it may be useful to continue with the exercises. You may also consider making an appointment with a therapist, trained in pediatric hypnosis. Furthermore, hypnosis may not be the right treatment for every patient. In our study 7 to 8 out of 10 showed adequate improvement with home-based treatment, leaving a minority who will need something else such as cognitive behavioral therapy, medication or a diet.

If you want to recommend home-based treatment to your patients, you can download a flyer here and email or print it.
